The Kansas City-area education and music communities are mourning the loss of David “Dave” Hershberger, a beloved orchestra teacher, accomplished trumpeter, and passionate musician who was among the 12 people killed in a devastating skydiving plane crash near Butler, Missouri, on June 14, 2026. He was 54 years old.

Hershberger, a resident of Liberty, Missouri, dedicated much of his life to music education. He taught orchestra at Oak Park High School and Antioch Middle School within the North Kansas City School District, where he earned a reputation as an inspiring educator and mentor to countless students. School administrators described him as “not only a passionate educator and talented musician, but one of the kindest humans,” reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him.

Beyond the classroom, Hershberger was an accomplished musician and member of the Kansas City Wind Symphony. Federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

The Bates County Coroner’s Office later identified Hershberger as one of the victims, confirming his death alongside fellow skydivers and the pilot. The tragedy has been described as one of the deadliest skydiving-related aviation accidents in the United States in decades.
